Systemic Functional Linguistics

This course explores the definition and the notion of systemic functional linguistics. This course also gives information about the differences between traditional linguistics and SFL. In this course, the students are also provided with the knowledge of aspects related to systemic functional linguistics. In addition, the students are also facilitated to analyse texts related to English language teaching and learning. As text types/ genres are applied in English curriculum, the students are trained to apply genre analysis.

Course Outlines

Meeting Description
1 - 5 Understanding the concept of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) which consists of:
1. ideational (propositional content)
2. interpersonal semantics (concerned with speech function, expression of attitude)
3. textual semantics (theme and rheme, how text is structured as a message).
6 - 16 1. Being able to understand and explain one of the Metafunctions: Ideational Function
2. Being able to understand and explain one of the Metafunctions: Interpersonal Function
3. Being able to understand and explain one of the Metafunctions: Textual Function
4. Being able to understand and critically review the Dimensions of SFL (Systemic Functional Linguistics) & Stratal System
